Hi All - The NCBR Championship game last night at WHS proved to be one for the ages as a capacity crowd watched the two best Westwood teams this summer battle in the heat and dust for the crown. Coach Field's Big Red Machine had dominated the league all summer, posting an impressive 11-1 record in the regular season. Coach Cap's Gray Marauder's had secured 2nd place, and both teams beat the other 2 Westwood Teams to earn a spot in the Championship.

The game got off to a fast start in the top of the first for Red as their pitcher Jacob “Kal” Kalamvokis got the first 2 batters out. Eddie “ERog” Rogers then singled for Gray and quickly stole 2nd and then 3rd. When the throw down to third got away from the third baseman, ERog took off for home and just got his hand on the plate before the tag to help the Gray’s grab the 1-0 lead. The game stayed locked at 1-0 for the next 2 innings as Will “Matty” Matthews pitching for Gray and Kal for Red both dominated the hitters - leaving any potential runs on the bases.

In the 4th Team Gray again could not advance base runners against the first Red reliever Julian Colon. In the bottom of the inning Red got their first breaks. Alex Dayton reached first on an error, and advanced to 2nd on the overthrow to lead off. “Matty” clamped down and struck out the next 2 batters. The Red’s Charlie “Chuck” Rooney then blooped a single into right field and Dayton scampered home to tie the game. Jack Crowley then blasted a double into left center to drive in Rooney with the go ahead run for a 2-1 lead.

Colon came back out and battled on the hill in the 5th. After a fly out to open the frame, Gray’s Jesse Peck showed his blazing speed as he reached first on a grounder to short. He promptly stole 2nd, but could not advance as Julian struck out the next 2 batters. Elliot Harris – the Red closer came in for the 6th and kept Gray from advancing Joe “Sal” Salcedo who walked by getting Jacob “JT” Tryder to fly out to centerfield on a well struck ball.

In the last inning, Harris registered the first out and then walked Braeden “Murph” Murphy on a 10 pitch at bat. With 2 outs, Murph reached 2nd on a Cameron “Cam” Tran sharp single past the third baseman. Gray had something going. Elliot then showed off his big arm and struck out the last batter to seal the deal for Team Red in thrilling fashion. Afterwards, Coach Fields praised his Big Red Machine and their competitiveness all season long.

This wraps another successful but shortened summer for Westwood and the NCBR. The pandemic couldn’t stop these boys from playing the game they love! Congrats to all the players who participated in the best local baseball league around. We wish the graduating players success in their High School baseball endeavors, and hope to see the rest of these players back next season! Up next – Fall Ball!!
